Senior Project:The Flower Festivals of Saint Lucia

Donation protected
My name is Jonathan Philip and I am a Saint Lucian student, scheduled to complete my undergraduate Music Technology degree at New York University in May 2021. As part of the completion of my program, I am required to complete a senior capstone project, which serves as a representation of the skills I developed during my 4-year program. As a Saint Lucian studying abroad, it has always been my goal to infuse my projects with some of my identity. This is why I decided to pursue a project that not only allows me to display my culture, but to also give back to my country.

My project is to produce an album of 6 of traditional songs of our Flower Festivals (3 La Woz, 3 La Magwit), using the community La Woz and La Magwit groups with their musicians as a form of community empowerment to expose them to new methods of music technology for their music. I will be using a local studio to record these bands’ performances, and then undertaking the process of mixing and mastering the songs on my own. In addition to the musical aspect, I will also be producing and recording a short documentary about the Festivals, assisted by the Saint Lucia Folk Research Center and Hon. Msgr. Dr. Patrick Anthony, who has agreed to narrate some portion of the film. I have also received assistance from the Folk Research Centre in gathering research material for the project, as well as their help with connecting me with the local talent I will be using for my project. In turn, I intend to donate the final product to the musicians for their own portfolios, as well as the FRC, to contribute to their archives that were severely affected by the fire in March 2018.

The recording aspect of this project requires me to use several local talents to accomplish this project, as a result I am humbly seeking financial assistance in the sum of USD$1600 to facilitate paying the studio and the bands, as well as hospitality and transportation costs. I plan to start recording on January 9th, 2021 and to be completed with production by January 25th, before I return to New York to work on post production and complete my final classes of my undergraduate career.
