Hello! Our names are Asmi Gujral, Binalpreet Kalra, and Jasmeet Aulakh. We are a team of high school students from Ontario, Canada that are passionate about combatting world issues, promoting social justice, and creating a meaningful impact in our communities. In partnership with the Safe Drinking Water Project and the Brampton Rotary Club, it is our current mission to assist the Nigerian healthcare system with its response to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
In order to do so, we need YOUR help.
Nigeria’s Water Crisis
Malnutrition. Poor hygiene. Insufficient health personnel. Today, Nigeria’s healthcare system is plagued by chronic underfunding and limited infrastructure. In fact, only 5% of healthcare facilities in Nigeria have basic water, sanitation and hygiene facilities on-premises. A survey published in 2017 found that 91 percent of Nigerian drinking water contained E Coli bacteria to some extent. Unfortunately, due to this, more than 70 000 children under the age of 5 die every year at the hands of water-borne diseases. With enough help and care on our part, these deaths are preventable.
The Need for Sanitized Water in the COVID-19 Era
The time to act is now. The COVID-19 pandemic is relentlessly disturbing communities globally. There is an increasing need for clean water in third-world countries where it is scarce, seeing as access to safe water plays a massive role in its prevention and control. Due to Nigeria’s poor water and sanitation conditions, over 110 health workers have lost their lives in the fight to curtail the spread of the virus.
The response to COVID-19 at the international aid level focuses on making Personal Protective Equipment, medication, and cleaning products available, without regard for one of the most essential resources: clean water. Access to clean water is critical in reducing the effects of the COVID pandemic on developing countries, a resource that Nigeria lacks.
The time to act is NOW.
The Safe Drinking Water Project
The Safe Drinking Water Project provides an opportunity for individuals and organizations to assist Nigerian communities, internally displaced people (IDP) camps, and health centres by providing access to safe and drinking water. As of today, resources collected from the Safe Drinking Water Project have provided over 7000 people living in Nigeria with access to safe drinking water and 80 latrines (toilets).

Our Mission
Our specific mission is to help provide Nigerian communities with the resources necessary to access clean water and sanitized healthcare facilities, which includes water purification filters and soap. We are raising money to purchase:
* One LifeStraw Filter: $500 USD. This will serve up to 100 patients per day in Nigerian health centres.
* Soap: $150 USD. This will be provided to one (1) IDP camp. For more information about the logistics of an IDP Camp, click here
The fundraising goal is our project goal plus the administrative charges. GoFundMe charges approximately 8% of any money raised, bringing the cumulative goal to $710 USD ($980 CAD).
A donation of any amount helps, none is too small.
This virus impacts all of us. We live in a global economy, so we also carry the responsibility of addressing issues that are present in other countries.
