The Defiance Project

Hi, my name is Taylor Sorensen, aka The Trigger Code -
I am a songwriter and artist with Dualtone records in Nashville, TN and I am currently working on writing and recording a new record that is very different than any of my past works. This is the first time I have ever tried crowdfunding, but I hope you will please read on to learn why I have chosen to do so.

In June of 2022, a high school friend of mine, Tyler Micah Eckel, took his life after years of battling the effects of mental illness; schizophrenia, paranoia, personality disorders all plagued him.

Following his passing, I spent time with Tyler's father, Dr. Mark Eckel, who is also a dear friend and mentor of mine, learning more about Tyler's battle as well as that of the family and community who supported him. It was clear it was difficult, but it was also clear that although Tyler's mental battles were devastating, his care for others was deep and strong.

Something else that was clear - through his writing, Tyler shone a level of brilliance that only a select few have gotten to know.
Tyler wrote hundreds, probably thousands of poems, letters, and short stories.

Here is where I "come in". After the memorial service I was approached by a family member inquiring if I may have any ideas on how to bring some more exposure to Tyler's works. The first thought that came to mind (and I offered up) was that I could try and adapt some of his poetry to song; see if I could get Dualtone on board and in some small way perhaps point some people to more of Tyler’s works. The family liked the idea.

So, I got back to Nashville and started writing. Dualtone got on board immediately and agreed to do distribution once the songs were recorded. I found a good studio arrangement with an old friend and we have started the process of recording. However...

...In order for the songs to “manifest themselves with proper sonic quality” there is a great deal of time, talent, specialized equipment, etc. that need be procured. And as you may have guessed, that requires funds. Funds that an independent artist, vocational landscaper, husband and father of three boys simply doesn't have.
And that's why I am reaching out to you.

The goal is $8000 to cover the cost of the studio time, mixing and mastering as well as the miscellaneous (unforeseen broken strings, a meal for the guitarist, etc.)

Why call it the Defiance Project? Tyler lived in Defiance, OH. A great deal of those who cared for and supported him did as well. The best candidate for an album title is Defiance. But far beyond that, Tyler's words and his art were his defiance. A way of defying the negative voices and images he fought for over 20 years.

The hope is that this record will bring some light to Tyler’s brilliance, some healing to his family, some help to those battling with mental illness and those caring for them, and help to bring more awareness to the importance of mental health.
