An Eagle Scout Project by Kyler Straight

My name is Kyler Straight, and I'm fundraising for my Eagle Scout project with Scouting America Troop 90 of Brentwood. My project will be to build and install a custom-engraved memorial bench at Edna Hill Middle School for Cecilia “Cecy” Martinez, who passed away in February 2023 at the age of 33 after bravely battling metastatic breast cancer.

Cecy was a cherished member of our community who grew up locally and attended Edna Hill Middle School. She passionately gave back to our community as a teacher at both Knightsen Elementary and Mary Casey Black Elementary, and as a soccer coach through East County Revolution Football Club (formerly Impact) and Liberty High School. She worked tirelessly and passionately with our community’s youth. In 2021, she and her fiancé, fellow coach Jesus Gomez, welcomed their own daughter, Jordi, into the world. Cecy’s love for being a parent was immeasurable.

My Eagle project will include leading and mentoring a group of scouts to build and install a custom-engraved park bench to memorialize Cecy’s place in the hearts of all who knew her. The bench will be placed in the memorial courtyard at Edna Hill Middle School, where Cecy herself was a student.

My goal is to raise $1600 by September 20th. In addition to GoFundMe, I am also collecting recyclable cans, plastic bottles, and glass to turn in for funds and help our environment. Thank you in advance for any contribution you are able to make.
