****The Camo Coat Collection + Book Launch****

You’ve been waiting for it and now it’s finally (almost) here! The Camo Coat Collection launches officially on 02.02.2020, the mystical numerological portal connected to my ongoing creative and spiritual relationship with the number “8.”

The capsule collection launches with my new (first) book on Afro-Futurism in the form of an artist’s book/monograph highlighting eight performance/costumes with special design details and compiling eight selected essays on design, performance, costume, space, and ecologies representing a slice of my artistic contributions over the past 15 years in this field. The book title and further info will be announced with pre-sale at the start of the new year and will be available in both limited edition artist’s book format (8 copies) and in paperback. Follow @DenengeTheFirst , @TheCamoCoat and @InTheLusciousGarden  for updates.

The Osanyin Commemorative Portrait Series and The Camo Coat Collection are conceptual and applied Afro-Futurism projects begun in 2014 when I was an NEH Fellow for the Institute on Black Aesthetics and Sacred Systems. The collection is focused on protection—logistical and spiritual—in the urban landscape, inspired by Osanyin, the Yoruba orisa of healing and leaves, the wisdom of nature, and referencing dazzle camouflage, Tiv traditional textile from Nigeria, healing and thriving through ritual performance, and Afro-Futurist design practice in action. Many of the amazing cohort of scholars and practitioners are featured in the portrait series taken around Emory University campus at locations chosen by each person in a collaborative photographic process, collectively commemorating the historic convening. A series of leaf drawings I created during that fellowship have become the foundation of wall and textile prints used in the capsule collection along with Chicago-specific camo, tartan, and the Original Camo coat in a classic pattern. Save the Date for the Official Launch!
The Camo Coat Collection + Book launch on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at 2:20 p.m. Save the date!

Support!

Since I’m Black and it’s #BlackFriday (!), I’m sending this first notice about the official launch date to bring Camo Coat into the seasonal mix. I’ve never done a crowd-funding campaign, but if you’re excited and antsy to be part of manifesting this (and want to get that end-of-year tax write-off), I’ve created this GoFundMe ahead of #CyberMonday and #GivingTuesday. This campaign which runs through the launch date supports the launch including garment development, book design and printing, production for runway trunk show and book, business set-up costs for the collection such as contracts, publicity, and distribution which all incidentally come to $7925 so I rounded up a couple dollars to my magic number. That said, I’m just as happy—in fact, happier—for you to save your pennies and kobos for the book pre-sale and collection launch tickets (for those in Chicago) coming in January.

Most importantly, I love hearing from you! Please feel free to leave a note in comments below. Words of encouragement are always dearly and deeply appreciated as we speak positive futures into existence! So many people have expressed excitement over this coat and book--including those who stop me every few feet when I’m wearing the Original Camo Coat to compliment and let me know they're ready for *their* Camo Coat! Even babies give the side-eye like, can I get one in mini version?

I’m hoping you’ll save the date and be there to celebrate with me in Chicago. More details about how to RSVP and pre-order will be posted at the beginning of January. If you’re excited about the launch and would want to attend, leave a “Yes!” in the comments below!

Many thanks to all who have been a part of seeing this come to fruition. I see you and I’m grateful for you. Every moment of this seedling project's growth precious. Thank you!
