The Brien McMahon Indoor Track Team

Hi, my name is Valerie Kalunian and I am the head boys indoor track coach at Brien McMahon. While I am head boys coach, we have a co-ed team in which I work closely with both the male and female athletes at our school.

At McMahon, we have very hard-working athletes, with many who have gone all-FCIAC, All-State, and even competed at the national level.

Our athletes come from all different backgrounds. Some students-athletes are new to the United States, while others have grown up in Norwalk their whole lives. We also have families coming from various socio-economic backgrounds as well.

Most people see track as a sport where you just need a pair of sneakers and that's it. But track requires so much more. Our athletes participate in a variety of running, jumping, and throwing events which all involve different equipment and shoes. We purchase and supply the equipment (hurdles, shot puts, etc), but our funds do not include footwear.

Most athletes need both training shoes and racing shoes called spikes. Both shoes can be very costly for students and also hard to find in local stores. Over the years, we have tried to gather extra spikes/racing shoes/training shoes for athletes that may not have them, but our selection is still limited.

Our goal is to raise a little bit of money to provide some of our athletes with the proper footwear if they don't have it to avoid injury as well as allow them to take it to the next level. As mentioned, our athletes have a lot of potential and have the work ethic to achieve past the league and state levels.
