The Blonde Brawn's Brain Surgery

Donation protected
Luke, AKA the Blonde Brawn, is a bright-eyed, baseball-loving, kind, and intelligent 9 year old. He is scheduled to undergo brain surgery June 10 in New York for a rare condition called Chiari Malformation (CM).

We have started this account on behalf of Luke and his parents Scott and Jackie Jackson. We want to lighten the financial burden for them as they face high dollar deductibles and traveling/lodging expenses. Help us show this family love, prayer, and financial support.

BACK STORY

Luke has suffered from headaches all his life. Over the past two years these headaches began increasing in intensity and frequency, leading to vomiting, nose bleeds, and were unable to be controlled by pain medication. After multiple ER visits and new symptoms, Luke was sent for an emergency MRI. Doctors officially diagnosed Luke with Chiari in March of 2018.

Luke saw two different neurosurgeons in Texas; both felt the best course of action for the time being was to wait and watch to see if Luke's condition would progress. In the past year, Luke has declined to the point he is losing feeling in his hands and he has trouble swallowing. His gross motor skills have been affected on his left side and he continues to get severe headaches. In April, the Texas neurosurgeon reviewed Luke's scans and found he had a syrinx in his spine. This adds another condition onto the Chiari called Syringomyelia. The doctor recommended surgery and ordered more testing.

Naturally, Luke's parents want him in the best hands and under the care of the most experienced surgeon possible. Scott and Jackie researched their options and scheduled a consult with Dr. Greenfield, a pediatric neurosurgeon in New York who specializes in Chiari and the specific surgery Luke needs. After seeing Dr. Greenfield in early May, it was recommended that Luke have the surgery sooner than later. Without surgical intervention Luke would continue to suffer and his health would decline.

In June, he will have decompression surgery where the neurosurgeon makes an incision in the back of the head and removes a small piece of the skull. Surgery will continue in a second step that involves opening the dura (duraplasty, durotomy) the tissue that covers and protects the brain and spinal cord. These two surgeries should quickly alleviate a lot of Luke's pain and the loss of feeling in his hands. He will be able to resume his "normal" life about 6-8 weeks after surgery.

Luke will be in the hospital for at least three days and won't be able to return to Texas for at least ten days following surgery. He will return to NY three months post surgery to follow up with Dr. Greenfield.
