The best dog ever needs surgery...

Donation protected
This gofundme request is to help Annie, an adorable six-year-old German Shepard/Rotweiller rescue to recover from a severe knee injury that requires an expensive operation that must be done soon or she will lose her leg.

Annie became injured while attempting to leap onto a daybed in the house.  She slipped on the bedding and her rear left leg fell between the metal rail and the mattress.  She howled in agony. It was obvious that something serious had occurred as she was immediately unable to bear any weight on the leg, and she's been physically sedentary and emotionally timid ever since.

Tom,  Annie’s 74-year-old master, loves her with his whole heart and rescued her when she was a puppy.  Annie has seen him through the loss of his longtime girlfriend a few years ago to cancer, and the subsequent passing of her three cats. They live alone together in a remote desert area of Southern California, far from Tom's children and grandchildren, and are constant devoted companions.

Tom needs this financial assistance for Annie because he lives primarily off a modest social security income and the receipts of a small internet business selling his used collection of vinyl records. Both sources of income barely cover basic necessities.

The injury was diagnosed by an animal clinic, with financial assistance provided by some of Tom’s close friends who know the dog well.  X-rays showed a torn crucia ligament that connects the lower leg to the thigh.  It is an accident especially severe in large dogs and almost always requires expert surgical intervention to enable the dog to regain use of the leg.  It is similar to the ACL injuries suffered by professional athletes that usually require 6 months to a year’s recuperation after surgery. Recovery following surgery similarly long for dogs, though the recoup time somewhat less than for humans.  The good news is that the surgery, when performed, has an 85% success rate.

Tom never really retired to the “golden years,” always needing extra funds to support himself after retirement.  But in the last few years some serious and debilitating illnesses have rendered him unable to work.  In his full-time working life, he was a teacher and held various positions in educational and service communities.  The irony of this request is that he now finds himself seeking almost the same kind of help for his beloved Annie that he provided to students and families in his career of over 40 years.

We are also applying to several charities that provide financial assistance to animals in need of physical recovery.

This is one case where a small contribution will make a real difference.

All sick animals deserve a chance at recovery, yet friends and family have described Annie as especially adorable, incredibly friendly and a special sweetheart to both the human and canine community. She is still essentially an "aging puppy" with boundless enthusiasm and a huge love of being active. Large dogs such as her commonly live to fifteen years of age and beyond, so this investment will pay off for many years to come.

Please help us.  All contributors who wish to share an email address will receive updates on the status of Annie’s recovery progress along with the progress of this “Gofundme” effort .
