The Batavia Memorial Concert

I’m David Becker Emmy and Grammy nominated guitarist and composer. In 2010, I released a very personal recording, Batavia. Batavia tells the story of my mother and her families Internment in a Japanese prison camp in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia from 1942-1945.

I assembled these stories directly from my mother, her younger brother as well as her best friend and was able to compose what has been become one of the most challenging set of compositions I have ever recorded.

Batavia not only tells their story, this little known tragedy of WWII, but also is intended as a healing process for the suffering of the Hundred’s of Thousands of Dutch and Indo Nationals persecuted during this horrific time in our history.

2020 marks the 75th anniversary of their release from captivity. Their release was NOT jubilant as was the case in Europe. The Allied forces did not even appear on the Islands until weeks, even months after Japan had officially surrendered.  In fact many were not even aware of their freedom until much later. Many of these survivors never spoke of their internment and died shortly after their release, due to the horrific conditions in the camps.

2020 is also the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the world renowned Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands

To honor these forgotten victims of war, I am teaming up with the Metropole Orchestra to perform the entire Batavia Album live. This once in lifetime concert will take place on Sept 26th, 2020 at the Zuiderstrand Theater in The Hague, The Netherlands.

We have chosen to commemorate this horrific event in our History through the most powerful medium available to us, MUSIC!

Music has always superseded any and all political agendas and will continue to do so. It is our intention to use this medium as an educational forum  by taking this tragedy and turning into something positive for future generations.

We MUST NEVER FORGET the perils of WWII, but we must move forward in a meaningful manner to help honor ALL of the victims and begin a long healing process.

Therefore, Portions of the Proceeds of this project will  go to a Music scholarship fund to enable  young music students to study in Hilversum with myself and the Orchestra.

We need your support, therefor we are seeking sponsors for this
unique presentation, of this little told life changing historical event.
Please help honor  the forgotten victims of WWII.
