The Arctic Circle

Donation protected
I will shortly be embarking on the journey of a lifetime.

I’ve been accepted into a program called The Arctic Circle.  It’s a residency onboard a ship, which sails in and around the Arctic Circle.  I will be a part of the Autumn Art & Science Expedition, September 30th to October 17th of this year. (Yes, very soon!)

More information on this incredible program here:
http://thearcticcircle.org

From the website:
International artists, scientists, educators and innovators will live and work aboard a Barquentine Tall Ship while sailing the waters of the international territory of Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago just 10 degrees latitude from the North Pole.

Wait, what?  How did this happen?

I have been working on a play about climate change, called Timebomb, a joint commission from the American Repertory Theatre and the Harvard University Center for the Environment. The research for this play is pretty much the most terrifying I have ever done.  For this reason, the play has become first a comedy, and then a sex farce, as I grasp for ways to keep an audience open to the ideas without shutting down in despair.  However, the tension of the play balances on rapid shifts between this high (or low) comedy, as one scientist prepares to testify before a senate committee in Washington, DC, and moments of profound beauty and wonder, as another is involved in the task at hand: studying a particular glacier, before it’s gone.  Diving into research and interviewing scientists, I’ve learned so much, but I also realized there was something I was missing.  I needed to get up close.  Experience the majesty of the Big Ice.

I am thrilled and honored to have been invited to join The Arctic Circle Autumn Expedition.

Between program fees, travel to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, and necessary gear, I need to raise $10,000.  Thanks to generous sponsors, I am halfway there.  But I need to raise an additional $5,000. to make the trip.

Please help send me to a place I never dreamed I would go, and cannot wait to see with my own eyes.

Please note, this campaign is very short- three weeks only!

Any amount will be a tremendous help.

If I raise funds beyond my goal, I will use them for travel to my friend Nadine Schaeffer’s organic orchard, which has inspired another thread in the play, and which must also be experienced up close.

Thank you so much,
Carson
