The Alana Toon Cancer Support Fund

Donation protected
In November 2019, our friend and colleague Alana was diagnosed with Metastic Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma, with a large retroperitoneal mass in her abdomen and lesions in her lungs and liver.  A cancer survivor already, Alana had survived three cycles of chemotherapy and surgery and had been cancer free since 2016.  As you can imagine, this diagnosis has been devastating for Alana and her family.  She is currently off work and on short-term disability.  Alana begins chemotherapy on January 29, 2020 and needs to start a daily medication called Pazopanib, which will help control tumor growth, extend her life and improve the quality of her life.

While her chemo is covered by AHS, Pazopanib is not covered by Alberta Health or her drug plan. This daily medication is very expensive and costs $4,000 per month.  That's just over $131 per day! Alana and her family need our help as a community to help pay for this important medication.  This fund raising campaign intends to raise enough funds for a year’s worth of medication.

Alana is a colleague of mine and a dear friend.  For three years, she sat at my right hand as a Unit Clerk on PCU 27, the Hemodialysis Unit at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, AB.  She’s been an awesome support to me and other others in a very complex work environment and has had a huge impact on the care of our patients for 11 years.  I feel strongly that it’s time to support Alana in turn.  It’s just the right thing to do.

More about Alana:  She is the mother of 3: Brian (21), Amy (20) and Eric (17).  She has been married to Gregg for 5 years, following a 3 year courtship. Recently, her mother flew over from Holland to help provide support.  While it’s likely that Alana has a terminal illness, she wants to make the most of her life with spending quality time with her children and husband, continue working to some degree, traveling a bit, bird watching, going on road trips and spending time in the mountains. Her family is active, supportive of each other and very close.

Please contribute what you can to this fund, whether that be $5, $25, $100,  or more ... it will add up if we all contribute just a little.  Skipping an overpriced coffee from your favourite shop and donating to this cause will fill your soul in ways a coffee won't.  :)

My name is James Cooke, I’m a registered nurse and am coordinating this GoFundMe campaign.  Funds raised here go directly to Alana and will be for the exclusive purchase of Pazopanib.

Alana, her family, friends and colleagues all thank you for your thoughtful and generous support.  Please share far and wide, on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
