Play and Learn’s Agoro (Play) Project

The Play and Learn Agoro Project is an initiative by the organisation that emphasizes on the need to have playgrounds in public schools that are underserved to help balance the equation between playing and learning during school hours. The word “agoro” means to play in Twi, a language spoken widely in Ghana. To start the project, the Play and Learn Foundation (PAL) has teamed up with the University Staff Village Basic School in Accra, Ghana. This school serves many underserved students from the Okponglo community. The school is currently lacking a playground and space for children to play during their breaks. The plot of land where we will build the playground is next to the kindergarten classroom. The kindergarten class has around 60 students who will primarily be using the new playground.

Why Build a Playground?

After intense research and questioning, the school authorities have agreed to build a playground for the children to serve a balance between work and play. Playgrounds are important to get kids exercising and working on their balance, coordination, and agility. Aside from the many physical benefits, playgrounds have been proven to help children learn and develop through play while also giving their minds a much needed break in between lessons. This particular playground would provide a space for the children to practice and hone their essential skills. The children would constantly learn through making friends, sharing, taking turns and interacting with other children. This increased interaction with children of all backgrounds and abilities gives kids a more open view about their surroundings and gives them an opportunity to develop problem solving skills that would be of benefit in building the nation. More so, over 75% of Play and Learn students attend the University Staff Village Basic School. It is our mission as an NGO to provide beneficial amenities such as this playground to the children in underserved communities.

Budget

After speaking to Tufa Landscaping Company  and Almighty Toys and Furniture Works who will help install the equipment, our total budget came to $6,131 (30,655 Ghana Cedis). This includes leveling the ground, installing new grass, removing a broken merry-go-round, installing new fencing, and the playground equipment. We have chosen two jungle gyms with four slides, four swings, and two seesaws. The materials we picked are durable and can withstand pressure even with the constant  daily use by 60+ children.
