Hello!
My name is Thapelo Masita. I come from South Africa, in a small town called Bloemfontein. I am currently studying Cello at the Eastman School of Music,in the United States.
I started playing cello as part of a small program, much like "El Sistema", in my home town called the Mangaung String Project! The program was created by a fantastic American Bassist, Peter Guy, In order to help bring classical music to children living in disadvantaged communities and townships around Bloemfontein. Without Mr Guy and the teachers at the Mangaung String Project, I cannot imagine where I would be today.
Now that My Interlochen Journey has come to an end, I am a student at the Eastman School of Music, in the studio of Mr Steven Doane.I could not feel any lukier than I do now! Mr Doane is a very special artist and I am fortnate to get to study with someone of his calibre.
It is however a very expensive endevour to afford my studies here. The reality is that even with the amount of merit scholarships i have received it is still not enough. It is scary when one realizes that the ratio of the South African Rand to the USD is : R 1,00= $ 0.11. Making it impossible for any middle class South African to afford an Education abroad which for classical musicians is not a luxury but a necessity.
Therefore, I ask YOU to help with Anything you can, so that I can complete my studies here.
Thank you In advance
