Building towards Truth and Reconciliation

First Nations communities have had “epidemics” of suicide. Among 15 to 24 years old, suicide is five to seven times the Canadian average for the same age group.

During one of many visits to remote First Nations Communities, a resident Nurse asked if I had spoken to my young nieces and nephews about suicide. I said: "of course I haven't, I don't think children this young need to be taught about such things... how would I even start the conversation?”

After hearing my own words that I realized her point. Generations of children were literally taken from their families and put in Residential Schools. Traditions were lost and families divided. This led to emotional detachment and internalized depression. Today, communities face inadequate housing, lack or loss of funding for mental health services and extracurricular activities / organized sports.

Suicide is so prevalent that even a 5-year-old is familiar not only with the term but is dealing with the loss of friends and family members and know the means by which to carry it out. They are sometimes contemplating their own future.

It is of utmost importance to provide hope. Help me bring joy to the lives of children so that a child be a child.

I am committed to delivering seasonal cheer in the form of winter clothing, toys and sporting equipment directly to the communities most effected by the lack of funding for child development and mental health services.

Donations can be in the form of clothing, toys or sporting equipment, money or services.

Thank you for your time and compassion!
