Technology for East Newark School

Hi, my name is Isabella Drzala. This past year, I have volunteered at the East Newark Public School, one of the lowest paid school districts in NJ, teaching Math and English to 5th graders. While volunteering, I began to realize how much I took for granted in my own life. For example, English, the language I had grown up speaking, had to be taught for the first time to most of the students attending East Newark as they had been raised in a predominantly Latino/Hispanic household. For many students, comprehending math is an issue due to the lack of a solid foundation in basic mathematics. However, what makes it difficult for the students at East Newark to advance in their studies is the lack of technology. Whereas technology seemed to be a necessity in my life, it was a foreign concept to the students at East Newark. I have made it my goal to provide technology in the form of iPads for the children at East Newark in order to help them succeed in both Math and English by incorporating various apps to make learning an easier and more understandable process.
