On Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, Hawaii County firefighter Yurik Resetnikov broke his neck and nearly died in a body surfing accident at Sandy Beach on Oahu. When lifeguards, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel pulled him out of the ocean, his lungs were full of seawater and he was unresponsive. Rescuers were able to revive him on the scene.
Yurik, a loving husband and father of two girls, is now paralyzed and in the intensive care unit at The Queen’s Medical Center. Doctors say he had a significant spinal injury when he fractured his cervical 6 and cervical 7 vertebrae. Yurik had surgery on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, which realigned his spine and stabilized the fractures. However, Yurik has paralysis from about the nipple line down. He is awake and a ventilator is helping him breath. Doctors say he may be at Queen’s Medical Center for a month or longer. It is unknown when Yurik and his family can return home to the Big Island.
Yurik has spent most of his life helping others, whether it was serving as a coach for the Kai Opua Canoe Club or helping with one of sports teams or surfing competitions his daughters -- Kona and Mehana -- were participating in. He grew up in Kona, went to Konawaena High School, and served in the Air National Guard.
Becoming a firefighter was a dream he made true in 2008. As a part of this job, Yurik was constantly confronting dangers and helping others, yet always reluctant to accept credit for himself. Yurik was among the Big Island rescue workers honored this September for their meritorious service above and beyond the call of duty during the 18th annual Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation Awards Ceremony.
