Social assistance is a joke in terms of providing financial aid for anyone, especially someone struggling to survive, let alone LIVE, with metastatic breast cancer.
One of my oldest friends, Tiffany, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer a year and a half ago. She was first diagnosed with Stage IIa IDC breast cancer five years ago. She underwent aggressive chemotherapy treatment, as well as a double mastectomy in an attempt to stop the cancer. It went into remission for three years, but it came back with a vengeance, spreading to her bones, liver, ovaries and her perotoneal lining. We are thrilled to say that since then, most of her lesions have reduced dramatically, and with the help of hormone and bone therapies, the cancer has remained stable for a year! Alas, that does not mean she has had a year free from symptoms. :(
In a recent conversation with Tiff, I was heartbroken and frustrated to hear this once strong and vibrant woman sound so desperate and defeated. She said: "I've completely failed at life. I can't take care of myself, and at 38, I'm really no one else's responsibilty. That said, what I wouldn't give for a year, or shag it, even 6 months without money having to be a factor in the care I seek."
So here we are. It would mean the world to us if we could raise enough money for Tiffany to live without worry for a year or longer.
If you know Tiffany, you know that she's one of the warmest, kindest, most giving people around. And that's why we hope that you will think about helping her. All she really wants to get back to being herself, to be able to contribute to her community.
Tiffany has been struggling with many things, including depression and chronic pain. But one of the biggest issues, which we can help with, is the lack of any real income. She finds herself between a rock and a hard place because she does not want to be a strain on the system or her friends and family... but there are realities of living with a terminal disease. Her doctors have told her that she isn't likely to ever work again, even though it is one of the things that she wants most.
"Why so high a goal?"
Fair question. The medical support Tiffany has recieved to date has been fantastic, but what she needs now is naturopathic adjuvant therapies and intensive counselling to bring her spirit back, not to mention being able to LIVE instead of EXIST. These things are not cheap without insurance coverage (she has already tried to go through eastern health regarding her mental health, unsuccessfully).
We're hoping to cover things like:
- Monthly living expenses for a year +
- Naturopathic treatments for a year and two trips to the Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre
- Intensive Psychological counselling
But what this campaign also gives her, other than the potential for freedom, is hope. As she said the other day, hope is something that has been lacking from her life.
