Matthew and Stephanie Hillyer had a goal this year: win at Nationals so they can both compete at the Jr. Pan American Karate Championship in Buenos Aires. They both won the gold medal in the 12-13 elite kumite division, boys +50kg and girls +45kg in the USA-NKF National Championship and USA Team Trials in Greenville, SC.
This was Stephanie's first time as an elite athlete, and Matthew's second year competing in the elite division in his age group. By winning the national championship, both brother and sister earned a spot on the Jr. National Team and will represent the USA and their dojo at the Jr. Pan American Championships to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in August. This campaign is for travel expenses for both kids and a chaperone, and includes food, lodging, and administrative fees. Unfortunately, the US does not help with any of the athletes' travel expenses, so any help will be greatly appreciated!
