This November, I will be running in the TCS New York City Marathon to raise money for the ACES Village School in North Haven, CT, where my cousin, Gwendalyn Delancy receives unwavering support in her development and education. Gwendalyn was born on April 3, 2012. A severe event during birth caused accute and global brain damage, resulting in cerebral palsy, cognitive delays, motoric disabilities, and cortical blindness. Gwen’s parents, my first cousin Griffin and his wife Jillian, received a grim early prognosis on Gwen’s future. Gwen cannot walk or see, but she is completely full of life. It has been and will continue to be an uphill battle, but Gwen is winning, in part thanks to her experience at The Village School.
The Village School is a public elementary school which specializes in providing quality education and social experiences for developmentally challenged students of all ages. Gwen sits in The Village School's kindergarten classroom with six other students, all of whom have advanced disabilities. In the kindergarten classroom, each student works directly with a faculty member to participate in daily activities at their own pace. These faculty members are the definition of selfless, dedicating each and every day to the development of these children. The Village School receives state funding and has relatively adequate facilities to educate and care for most of their students. However, funding is tight and each dollar is spent to directly improve the lives of their students.
I’ve been lucky enough to receive guaranteed entry into this year’s New York City Marathon through a random lottery, which means I do not have to fundraise for an official marathon charity partner to participate. Instead, I am hoping to raise funds for The Village School’s kindergarten classroom. All funds raised will go directly to the classroom to pay for new specialized equipment, learning tools, and life experiences, which will continue to help Gwen and her classmates develop and learn. Any donations will be truly appreciated.
