Second Heart Transplant for Mike
Donation protected
This fundraiser is for my parents, Mike and Peggy Covert.
My dad Mike had a heart transplant when he was 22 years old way back in 1984. That heart sustained him for over 30 years but over the last several years, his health started to deteriorate and on September 13, 2013 he was placed once again on the transplant list. The months went by and it started to seem like it might never happen, but on March 12, 2015 he recieved the call that his new heart had finally arrived. His operation began on March 13th at about 7am and ended at about 5pm that day.
At this point I would like to point out that the number 13 is a lucky number for our family. Dad was the 13th person at SLUH to have a heart transplant back in '84. Great things tend to happen to our family in relationt to the number 13.
Back to the story. Dad's surgery went well but the new heart needed some support so while he is on the heart and lung support machines, he is being kept sedated. He could be on these machines for a while and are unsure when he will get to wake up. They also needed to keep his chest cavity open for observation but it is now being cleaned and closed up. They will be keeping Dad in the hospital for at least 3-4 weeks.
3-4 weeks is a long time, obviously, for a family member to be hospitalized. My Mom Peggy is taking a leave from work to be with my dad during his recovery. They will need support to help pay for their bills and things until my Dad is recovered.
Any and all donations are appreiated as well as thoughts and prayers. Please help my parents get through this hard time so that my Dad may be with us for another 30 years.
Sincerely, Ashley Covert <3
