Corey Gentry was a straight “A” student with a personality that everyone loved. He was awarded the title of “Class Clown” three years in a row. Corey had played football since the third grade. He loved to play the drums. Corey lives at home with his three sisters, two brothers and his mother, Vanessa.

On January 25th, 2014 sixteen year old Corey Gentry did what so many kids do, he went to sleep over at a friend’s house. This was a friend that Corey and his family had known for quite some time. In the middle of the night, his friend’s mother woke the kids up and made them get in the car. No one knew at the time that she was high on drugs and alcohol. A horrible accident occurred. In an instant everything changed and nothing would ever be the same.  

Vanessa got the call that every mother dreads. Corey was in an accident and at the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, Vanessa was told that Corey would die within 24 hours and if he survived that he would never wake up. Corey was on life support for 7.5 weeks. He was in a coma for 9 weeks. Corey had a broken neck, back broken in 3 places, 9 skull fractures and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) etc. Corey has had countless surgeries to fix the broken bones and also to insert three shunts to alleviate fluid from building in his brain. The damage to his brain cannot be fixed. It is forever.  

When Corey woke up from the coma, he could only move his right arm up and down. His right leg eventually started to move as well. Corey’s left arm and leg have received Botox several times to help with movement. He was put on a feeding tube after losing forty pounds in the hospital.  

On April 8th, 2014 Corey was moved to Frazier Rehab where they specialize in treating patients with brain injuries. Corey was still a level two on the coma scale meaning that he was aware of pain but was unable to cooperate with treatment. Initially, Vanessa was told that he was a “goner” and he would not recover. Vanessa knew that Corey was in there and that he would get better. While at Frazier Rehab Corey started to make slow progress. He was discharged at the end of July.

Corey is a TBI survivor, however, his life is altogether different. Corey is in a wheelchair. He is unable to talk, sit up, stand, walk or eat solids. Vanessa provides the 24/7 care that Corey now requires. The local therapy is not adequately equipped or trained to provide the specialized care that Corey needs to progress further in his recovery from TBI. Vanessa is a single mother who desperately needs financial help. Corey needs home therapy equipment such as a treadmill with harness. The mounting medical bills are overwhelming. Corey needs access to better therapy which Vanessa is being forced to pay out of pocket for. With the proper therapy and medical care his recovery from TBI is limitless. What happened to Corey is tragic but his life doesn’t have to be a tragedy.
