World Bicycle Relief (WBR) is ending transportation and time poverty in Africa and other underdeveloped regions by mobilizing people through The Power of Bicycles. WBR is committed to helping people conquer the challenge of distance, achieve independence and thrive. WBR envisions a world where distance is no longer a barrier to education, healthcare and economic opportunity. The Impact
For many people in rural regions of developing countries, poverty is a daily reality. In areas where walking is the only mode of transport, a Buffalo Bicycle offers the real and immediate benefit of reliable access to essential goods and services. Education: Student attendance increases up to 28% by saving 3 hours of valuable time for every 10 miles traveled.
Healthcare: Community healthcare volunteers make 45% more patient visits by being able to travel 4X the distance of someone walking.
Economy: Dairy farmers increase deliveries by 25%, in part due to a 5X increase in carrying capacity from hand-carrying.
WBR's innovative model, combines philanthropic distributions with social enterprise sales, and is the backbone on which they deliver greater efficiencies of scale, distribute more bicycles per donation and generate deeper impact where they work.
My Role
As a member of Team World Bicycle Relief at Ride the Rockies 2018, I plan to exceed the $5,800 I raised during this event last year when our team of seven riders raised enough money to buy 170 bicycles! This year, our team has doubled and our fundraising goals are much higher.
I enjoy working directly with WBR through their Colorado team and riding with our Ride the Rockies WBR Ambassadors, Michael O'Brien and Renee Lockey to use my love of cycling to raise funds for and awareness of WBR and the impact they have had on thousands of people.
