As the youngest selected team member, Ryan is excited to represent Australia at the Asia-Pacific-Oceania Cup in Powerchair Soccer!
Ryan is 12 years old, and has been selected as a member of the Under 21's side of the Australian Poweroos. The team will compete in October against teams from Japan and New Zealand.
We're so excited for Ryan to do something he loves, and we want to back him all the way, but in order for Ryan to pursue his dreams, he needs a new powerchair, specifically tailored for his body. In his own words, a power chair designed for wheelchair soccer is more agile, has more speed, and is just a whole lot cooler. But these new and improved wheels come at a cost. And it needs to be manufactured in the USA and shipped over, all before Ryan plays in October.
Ryan was born with spinal muscular atrophy, but that's never stopped him. He enjoys every day, and brightens the lives of everyone he knows. He has a wicked sense of humour, gets a lunch order on a Friday, and can occasionally be found shredding up the back oval doing donuts in his electric wheelchair. Sometimes, you'll even find a few students hanging onto the back for a ride.
Ryan usually gets a lift from the taxi to school in the mornings, where he is a valuable member of the school band, and attends rehearsals twice a week. But when the taxi isn't his style, you'll see him blitzing down Harrington Street, his dad running along behind, puffing with exhaustion. I asked Ryan if there's a speed limit currently imposed. He said as a minor, he cannot exceed 10 km/h, however he assures me that these rules are forgotten the moment a game begins.
Prior to being selected as the youngest member of the Poweroos, Ryan played as a member of the Newcastle Jets Powerchair team. He's been playing powerchair soccer for the last couple of years and has been vital in his team securing the win!
