As many of you know, Molly was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 10 of this year.
I remember getting her call while I was sitting at dinner. Her voice was not the usual bubbly and upbeat Mo I was used to. She was quiet, and I could hear the panic in her voice. She was in utter disbelief. Hearing the words “dude, it is cancer” is something you don’t expect to hear from a healthy 28 year old girl who instead of partying her way through school, studied her butt off to become a nurse and then a Nurse Practitioner.
I remember thinking- what do I even say? What do I do?
Triple negative breast cancer is the SOB that messed with my best friend. And after research I found that this is a super aggressive form of cancer that is more rare than other breast cancers but is rapidly becoming more common in young healthy women with no family history or risk factors.
Research also said that because of her type of cancer, she would undergo chemo first and then possibly radiation and then surgery.
After tears and anger, one of my first thoughts was, HER BOOBS- she needs to get them taken off. No questions asked.
But then I thought, how can she lose her boobs- one of the things that makes us as women feel most sexy and most feminine.
At 28, Molly will never look at her body the same. After this diagnoses and battle, her body will have fought the toughest thing a body can undergo. It’s undergone pokes, procedures, and poisons a body shouldn’t have to face this young.
She should look at her body and feel so proud of what it’s done. She should look in the mirror and feel the same love and happiness on the outside of her body as we all know she does on the inside.
Because she deserves the best treatment, Molly has decided to go to New Orleans for one of the nations best surgeons for her reconstructive surgery.
The new gold standard for reconstructive surgery after mastectomy is called a DIEP procedure. This is where they take tissue from her abdomen and use it to reconstruct her breasts. The surgery is extremely invasive and requires her to be under anesthesia for 12-13 hours. Unlike implants, this procedure will allow her own tissue to be used and won’t have to be replaced every 6-10 years. Currently, NOLA is one of the top surgery center that specializes in breast cancer patients like Molly. Her recovery will be very extensive, and she will be in NOLA for at least 10 days after the surgery.
I’m proposing a fundraiser to raise money for Molly’s procedure and out of pocket funds for travel and stay along with other medical bills and expenses she’s acquired along this cancer journey.
Family and friends have been so supportive through this whole journey and she was hesitant to let us do this. However, any dent in the amount she will owe will make such an impact for her and her future.
