Just  a few short weeks ago, things were really looking up for my niece, Laura Mauro, and her family.  The three oldest of her children Tommy, Moriah, and Mackenzie were all back at college, and the youngest, Noah was enjoying his junior year of high school.  Laura had a routine endoscopy and was awating the results with no reason for concern.  On a bright sunny morning in October as she headed out to work, Laura actually said to herself "I love my life" and  not even ten minutes later, her doctor called with devasting news.  A biopsy from the endoscopy showed what no one ever wants to hear...cancer.

Laura was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer at the GE Junction, which meant the cancer was in both her esophagus and stomach.  Her doctor referred her to Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. There she was blessed to become the patient of Dr. Stacey Su, MD, FACS, in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Division of Thoracic Surgery.  What a blessing Dr. Su has been!

On December 18th Laura underwent an esophagectomy, a major surgery that lasted 12 hours.  As of today, December 28th, Laura remains in the hospital.  Tom, her husband has been by her side as well as Moriah for her entire hospital stay.  Once Laura is released she will endure a very long convalescence at home.  She will be out of work for quite a while.  Did I mention Laura works three jobs?  I did mention three in college, guess that goes hand in hand with as many jobs.  Laura has a feeding tube which will be in place for a minimum of six weeks as her source of nutrition as her esophagus and stomach heal. She will need Physical Therapy as well as Occupational Therapy to help restore her well being.  All this has created quite a financial burden on this family.  There have been many trips to Philadelphia and they will continue for many months to come. Laura's lifestyle has been and will continue to completely evolve as a result of her diagnosis and treatment.

As we head into this New Year I gratefully ask that you try to alleviate some of the worries from their hearts and minds.  Even in the darkest times we need to look for light, and Laura has a positive attitude and is thankful for an early diagnosis.  Please give this fmaily the help  they would not ask for, but certaintly need. Thank you for your time and consideration.  God Bless.
