Help Team Korea get to the 2025 Roller Derby World Cup!
Beschermde donatie
Team Korea is made up of skaters from the Korean diaspora from the United States of America, Australia, and Canada. Team Korea made its debut at 2018 Roller Derby World Cup and it was such a special moment to be able to play alongside fellow Koreans - for many of us, we are usually the only player of Korean descent in our leagues.
There are currently no active roller derby leagues in Korea. For roller derby skaters of Korean descent, roller derby offers us a unique chance to express our identities in ways that challenge restrictive outdated stereotypes of Korean women. Korean society is currently undergoing transformative changes with respect to hierarchical gender roles and heteronormativity, and roller derby helps those of us in the Korean diaspora challenge some of these feminine ideals. We’re excited to inspire the world with the diversity that exists in Korean people, beyond the beautiful K-pop stars and 10-step Korean skincare regime. We’re not afraid to take up space and get our faces dirty!
Team Korea does not specifically represent South or North Korea. We see ourselves as one people who may be separated by political lines - which have divided many of our families - but still share over a thousand years of history, culture and collective pride. Being scattered around the world, we don’t get as many opportunities to play together as a team, but we were excited to play as Team Korea and Friends at a scrimmage at RollerCon 2024. This rare opportunity was a blast and made us even more excited to play at World Cup! In a similar way that we long in our hearts for our families that have been separated from us, we can’t wait to get together again and play as team. This is why we hope that you all as our supporters will play a part in helping us make this happen at World Cup. 화이팅!
