Team Brolin for the 2022 Olympics

I believe in the power of community. I believe that if anyone is rich in their pockets or in their hearts or homes, it is because someone along the way cared. I am training to be the first African Snowboarder in the Olympics because of my communities, and all of those who supported me along the way.

Growing up on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda with my father and eight siblings, my childhood was rambunctious. With lots of siblings, grandparents, cousins, I was raised by a boisterous village and grew up with the idea that everyone lends a hand in the community to support each other.

At the age of 12, I found out my mother was alive and living in Boston, Massachusetts. A few months later, I boarded a plane headed to the states, with a brand new toothbrush and a jacket in a little backpack. I traveled alone, guided to each airport gate on my international flights by kindly stewardesses. Stepping off the final plane into the New England cold, I felt my whole body freeze from the chill and shock. It was the first time I had seen snow.

My mother worked as a caretaker for elderly in hospice so I joined an after school program that would take kids skiing and snowboarding at our local ski hill outside of Boston. Being on the mountain was one of the first places where I felt community in America and felt fully present in my body and mind. All of the nose and chaos in my mind that came after my move to the US quieted when I snowboarded. After a series of fantastic circumstances, I moved to Jackson, Wyoming in 2009. There, I was able to take my snowboarding to the next level through the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club.

Snowboarding taught me how to fail, it taught me how to build relationships, and ultimately became a passion that would forever change my life. I’ve been snowboarding professionally for the last four years, competing in slopestyle competitions around the world while studying to become a doctor. In 2015, I established Uganda’s first Winter Olympic Federation and have been riding under the Ugandan flag in all FIS sanctioned competitions since. My dream is to be the first African snowboarder in the Olympics and break down barriers and stereotypes in the sport. So many people have opened doors for me, and I want to be able to do that for others.

The 2022 Olympics will be my final chance to qualify for the games. I’ve been dreaming about the Olympics for ten years and know that I am ready to step onto this stage. I want to show others that we truly have no limits in this life; that with belief and support of our communities we can accomplish anything. Uganda raised me. Boston raised me. Jackson and Salt Lake City have raised me. In the same way that I was given so much by the snowboarding community I want to use my path as a way to give back to future generations.

I invite you to be a part of history and help us reach the 2022 Winter Olympics together.

Thank you for contributions. You, too, are a part of Team Africa.
