Student Teaching Abroad!

Donation protected
I'm Nick Ramsey and I'm a Senior majoring in Education at Ohio University Lancaster/Pickerington. I am the first regional campus student of Ohio University to be awarded the opportunity to conduct student teaching abroad. I have been chosen to teach Middle School-age students in Perth, Australia. The program is called COST(Consortium of Overseas Teaching) and it is growing across many universities around the country. The program consists of substituting your final senior student teaching experience from a local school to a school in another country. After a series of rigorous applications and trainings, I have been nominated to be a part of this program at Ohio University Lancaster. This study abroad experience is unique because you do not travel as a class like most other programs. In my class of about fifteen students, almost every student is going to a different country or different city within a country. You find somewhere to live(luckily I have a host family), buy your plane ticket, and jump into the classroom the day after you arrive. I anticipate this experience to be nerve-racking at first but I have a strong purpose in mind that I intend to guide me.

As an aspiring teacher, I have a strong desire to bring cultural awareness to the classroom. I believe our youth can benefit tremendously from receiving an education that has a global perspective. I also believe that having a global awareness can cultivate innovation in the classroom and can bring about rich and robust learning opportunities to students here in the US. This opportunity to travel abroad and spend an extended amount of time in another country's school system will help me become a better equipped teacher.

I have been a volunteer for Big brothers/Big sisters for over two years now. I have a little brother that I see at least once a week. We always have a great time hanging out whether it be at school or outside of school. I have been with him since he came into fifth grade and am excited to see him go off to junior high next year to grow into a positive young adult.

I am also particularly interested in serving low-income communities. I demonstrated this by going to Haiti in the summer of 2012 to offer educational assistance to children in orphanages. It was an awesome, yet humbling experience and one that I would like to repeat. Upon graduation from Ohio University in 2013, I plan to seek teaching opportunities in urban and/or under privileged communities.

I am seeking monetary assistance for travel and living expenses in Perth, Australia from August - December, 2013.

Thank you in advance to all who offer monetary and moral support. I truly believe that no man is an island and I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to those who have helped me get to this point in my academic career. I will use this experience to give back to our community and into the future of our children.
