On the 6th April 2020, Cyclone Harold tore through the northern parts of Vanuatu, after rampaging through the Solomon Islands. The Category 5 Cyclone devastated many parts of the northern islands including Luganville town on Espiritu Santo. With a population of an estimated 20,000 people the hardest hit communities have been the vulnerable villages, where almost all the structures have been affected. Houses have been lost, roofing blown off, water supply contaminated, electricity disrupted, crops ruined and all this on top of an unprecedented global pandemic.
This disaster comes at an incredible challenging time for Vanuatu. Due to COVID-19 regulations, international aid teams have been strictly limited from entering the disaster zone. Supplies have been sent from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, China and New Caledonia but distribution has been slowed by the epidemic.
In the absence of a more coordinated global response, the local community of Luganville has come together to form a grass roots charity group. “Big Heart Island Vanuatu” which was formed in the days following the cyclone and aims to help the community and those most affected by:
•Purchasing all aid within the country (and where possible, local businesses) to help the economy
•Distribute emergency food supplies, focusing on fresh vegetables and fruits grown from other unaffected parts of Vanuatu
•Help remote communities with difficult access to roads to rebuild schools and homes
•Distribute hygiene and shelter kits including tarpaulins and tents
This is a charity started by the people of Vanuatu for the people of Vanuatu. Thank you for your support, and we will be posting regular updates of our progress.
