Mr. Myers' Social Studies Class

Donation protected
I fight to achieve education equity and to support public schools by teaching integrated social studies at Warren New Tech High School in Warrenton, North Carolina as a Teach for America (TFA) Corps Member. As the proud son of a union steelworker and union special education teacher, I grew up in the Ohio Valley—in the heart of coal country—witnessing firsthand the power of education and the important role teachers play in a community’s economic growth, the mentorship of children, and youth development.

Therefore, I joined Teach for America because I strongly related to their mission statement: “One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.” Now I need the help of my friends, family members, and neighbors to obtain the materials and resources required to provide a quality education experience to all of my students.

This fall I will serve in TFA’s Eastern North Carolina Region, working in a rural school with a 75% minority enrollment and 99% economically disadvantaged student population. I am slated to teach World History and Civics and Economics. WNTHS embraces Project Based Learning and is part of the STEM schools network (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Most of my students come from a socioeconomic background that prevents them from purchasing their own school supplies. Many rely on free and reduced lunch to be fed and have limited (or no) access to the resources and materials they need to be successful. In NC, 25 percent of children live in poverty, and the rural communities of Eastern North Carolina are home to some of the highest concentrations of impoverished families in America. As a result, there are huge disparities in educational opportunities.

I need your help to make sure I have the supplies I need to make social studies engaging and relevant for my students; I am requesting your help to ensure my students have the supplies they need to grow and be engaged in their learning this year.

Your donation will be used to purchase materials like:

-Technology (Chrombooks and iPads for students to share inside of the classroom)
-Paper (notebook paper, copy paper, construction paper, etc.)
-Classroom culture materials (decorations, posters, etc.)
-Hygiene items (hand sanitizer, tissues, etc.)
-Books
-Personal dry-erase boards/ sleeves
-Dry-erase markers
-Poster paper
-Folders
-Filing drawers
-Office supplies (staplers, hole punch, trays, tape, etc.)
-Education games
-Field Trips
...and more

I sincerely appreciate any help you can provide. Together, we will ensure all of America’s children obtain the education they deserve.
