Taylor's Studying Dance in London

Donation protected
Hello dearest loves!

Thank you for taking the time to read my updates on school and for continuing to support me through this adventure!

To all that came together last summer and donated, danced, and offered support- thank you! I’m in awe of my community (and beyond!) that donated to my tuition fund, raising over 16k through the GoFundMe site. In addition to your extremely generous financial contributions, I have received endless love and support through long talks on the phone, emails, letters, and text. Though at first London was cold and unfamiliar, the love and guidance I received throughout this last year from all of you truly gave me life and helped me adjust to my new life as a student there. Thank you.

YEAR RECAP

My first year with London Contemporary Dance School far exceeded my expectations. In addition to daily training in Cunningham based technique, release/floor work, ballet, and Flying Low, I’ve been enrolled in critical studies, composition, improvisation, anatomy, and design courses. The faculty is just as diverse as the student body. I’m fortunate to train with teachers who have performed, studied, and worked in world renowned companies and schools, providing invaluable knowledge and insight into the dance world.

At LCDS I’ve been taught to think critically about dance and the human body. I’m encouraged to think about ideas around authorship, ownership, and the implications that come with making art using the human body. I’ve been exploring lots of questions related to all of this. What does it mean to be on stage? Who “belongs” on a stage? How expansive can dance be? What is dance?  LCDS teaches more than just dance technique, it is a multidisciplinary school training and encouraging responsible, creative, and exploritive artists to challenge the stereotypical ideas of dance.

*I have explored some of these ideas in a website I compiled for my composition course. You can find the link below if you care to see a visual layout of my thoughts and ideas.*

At the end of this exciting year, I was awarded the Principle Award by LCDS. This award is given to dancers that show dedication and talent within class. This is a very big honor and I’m so grateful to have my hard work recognized.

SECOND YEAR WITH LCDS

In my second year at LCDS, I’ll be able to select classes that best suit my interests. I will be taking courses that focus on creating and choreographing dance. A particular class I’m very excited about is call Choreology. Choreology is the study of dance through an objective aesthetic lens, focusing more on the visual versus symbolic notation within movement. Towards the end of the year I will be participating in LCDS’ Teaching course lead by former Cunningham dancer Jeannie Steele. In this course I will learn useful techniques such as effective language when giving corrections to working with live musical accompaniment.

Next year will be full of performing, creating, and further self exploration!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The generous donations I received last summer saw me through my first year of school covering the cost of tuition. These donations are still helping me with this coming years tuition. Like we all know, school is damn expensive and I need your help to continue my education further.

Over the next two months, I am asking for your support in raising $4,000 to continue my educational goals. This summer I’m working two jobs and teaching at the beloved and famed Hipline Dance in Oakland, CA. All wages and compensation is going directly to my tuition. After totally my expected income over the summer, $4,000 is what remains in funds needed to pay my tuition.

As most of my closest friends and community know, receiving an education within dance has been one of my dreams. So often I have surreal moments walking from the Tube to my school in the morning before class thinking, “this is my life! I’m dancing everyday! I’m in London dancing every day!” and that is thanks to you!

Reach out if you have questions about my program, about the dance I’ve been exploring, where to find my class schedule, or anything else you might want to talk about!

Thank you all so deeply! Please share and pass along my page!
