Let's face it. All females encounter their period. Every. month. For those of us fortunate enough, the arrival of Aunt Flo includes Advil/Aleve, heating pads, feminine wipes, leaks, pantiliners, pads, tampons, and sometimes if we're lucky, a chocolate bar.
However, these necessities are not possible for the homeless. Cramps are just...cramps and something to deal with. Leaks are the norm. Heating pads can maybe be a bottle of boiling water from Starbucks. And then there come the tampons and the pads. It's not okay that women have to choose between a meal or feeling clean. They deserve dignity. Feeling like you cannot properly take care of yourself can result in depression. These are humans who deserve respect just like anyone else, no matter their class or living conditions. Think of the impact we can make if we show them that they matter. They are important. They are noticed. They do not need to feel ashamed.
We are six young women in our freshmen year of high school. Our fund is called Period Monster. We have been fundraising and distributing care packages for over a year now. Over the course of the past year, we distributed over 350 packages, and we hope to distribute even more packages this year. We distribute these packages on midnight runs into the city, to SHARE the project, homeless shelters, and will make a distribution to a refugee center. We are working hard to get these packages to as many places and people possible by expanding our connections. Care packages include a handwritten note, 7 regular tampons, 5 super tampons, and 12 pads. Packages come in patterned makeup bags, as our main goal is to help bring dignity.
We are lucky to have access to these products and want to help others to feel clean and ready to take on the Period Monster! (They're not that scary! They're what makes us human!) Help us take action by supporting us to buy materials and get these powerful people on the road!
