This is a fundraiser to build the foundation for a nonprofit organization called Take Root Georgia. The long term goals of Take Root Georgia are to: end homelessness in the state of Georgia using an expanded version of the "housing first" model; transform run-down and underserved neighborhoods into vibrant, sustainable communities without displacing current residents; advance the use of alternative energy, urban agriculture, and environmentally responsible building materials; and provide a full spectrum of support services, educational programs, and social and career opportunities to residents to assist them with their transition out of poverty.
Take Root Georgia is focused on a unique human-centric approach that affords its participants the life-sustaining intangibles that are all too often overlooked by similar programs. Beyond the primary goals of the typical Housing First model, i.e., getting folks off the streets, placing them in permanent housing, and offering counseling and rehabilitation services, Take Root Georgia will also provide them with creative opportunities to explore their abilities and natural gifts, social opportunities to experience a healthy sense of connection and belonging (sometimes for the first time in their lives), and educational and career opportunities - specifically in fields that are progressive and in demand, such as sustainable development, alternative energy technology, and urban agriculture.
This campaign is aimed at raising the funds required to build Take Root Georgia from the ground up. Incorporation and application for nonprofit and 501(c)3 status is costly and complicated, and requires that we secure a lawyer with nonprofit experience. In order to build a successful campaign, we will need to invest in online and print media. We hope to secure much of this via donation, but we need to budget for it nonetheless. We will also need to hire a few part time employees: an accountant, campaign coordinators, and a development team. While we have many volunteers, we also need a salaried staff to maintain a stable core for the organization. We take transparency, efficiency, and honesty very seriously, and we will keep an up-to-date income and expenditure report available on our website. Any and all donations from this campaign that exceed the startup needs for Take Root Georgia will be rolled over into the direct action fund and will be used to achieve the goals listed above.
