My brother, Michael, is the sweetest thing on this earth. He suffers from Autism, Epilepsy, low tone Cerebral Palsy, Apraxia, OCD, Psychosis, and the Arnold Chiari malformation of the brain stem. He has the kindest, most loving heart and innocent soul, and despite his struggles, he is always joyful, always smiling, and always appreciating life. Our parents both suffer from debilitating mental illness, so as the oldest child, I feel as though his happiness and well being is my responsibility.
Michael desperately wants to go to Harry Potter World in Orlando. Unfortunately, money is so incredibly tight. He receives just enough in Disabilty payments each month to cover the cost of his group home, all medical care and prescriptions are covered by Medicaid, and groceries are paid for with food stamps. I myself would cover the cost of the trip without hesitation, but sadly my divorce has forced me to exhaust my savings to pay for my legal fees and my new apartment rent is so high, I am only able to break even each month. Our parents also have nothing to contribute, being that they receive Disabilty as well.
When Michael was a child, the doctors said he would not live past the age of 12. Next month, this darling boy will turn 25. His life is a miracle and every day with him is the most precious gift. As a primary player in his care, it is so important to me that he be able to live his days to the fullest and I strive for his days to be filled with fun, exciting adventures and opportunities to create memories he can cherish for as long as he is with us. After all he has experienced, endured and overcome in his short life, he deserves nothing less. He deserves butterbeer! I can just imagine how fantastic it would be to fulfill my brother's wish and help him celebrate this incredible milestone with an incredible gift.
