Sydnee Myers Recovery & Healing

Donation protected
On April 17th Cynthia & I received one of the scariest visits a parent can ever get.  A Maryland State Trooper was at our door at the time Sydnee should have been home and informed us she was a "Priority 1" Transport to Meritus Medical Center Hospital in Hagerstown b/c aviation was not available to take her directly to Baltimore Shock Trauma due to the weather.  Sydnee was a back-seat passenger in a bad car accident and sustained very serious injuries.  The bumps, bruises, and scrapes that come along with something like this were absolutely nothing compared to the head trauma she was dealing with.  When we entered the ER to be at her side we found her sedated and on a ventilator to protect her airway.  She was stabilized but on her way to I.C.U..   We spoke at great lengths with administrators trying to remain by her side but spent 2 days separated due to hospital regulations regarding COVID-19.  Eventually, with the help of a family friend the hospital relented and allowed one visitor.  Sydnee was in the I.C.U. with the worst of concussions and a subdural hematoma (brain bleed) being monitored by the I.C.U. doctors and neurologists for 13 days.  She was also recovering from a skull fracture down her forehead, to the left of her nose past her eye.  She had received a gash from above her left eyebrow, clipping her eyebrow, and ending on the side of her face past her left eye.

After her days in sedation, induced metabolic rest, Sydnee began to stir as medication was lowered.  The headaches and confusion to follow were disturbing to all.  Sydnee is a very strong person and personality and determined to fight through everything.  After 10 days in the ICU, she was transported to the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore where she could receive specialized care for her injuries and aid in her recovery.  Sydnee received daily physical, occupational, speech, therapy sessions based on what she could handle.  She also began speaking with a therapist regarding her mental state and everyday thoughts and feelings.  For the last month, this has been Sydnee’s every day.  Many days of frustrations, progressively worse headaches, confusion, and disorientation.  Her battle back to who she was, continues.

We have recently brought Sydnee home and she is continuing her rehabilitation.  Everyone in our family has been changed forever and our only focus is on Sydnee’s recovery.  We are blessed that she continues to get a little better every day as she fights through this hand that she has been dealt.  With Sydnee’s recovery, we are having to pay out of pocket for many things from her care & upcoming care. Sydnee is unable to work or drive for the foreseeable future. She has been unable to complete her freshman year at Salisbury Univ. and will need the help of tutors. Multiple types of therapy are still needed for quite a few months, a support animal (w/ vest & certification) is needed to help diagnose and deal with mood swings, anxiety, & depression.  Possible trips to and from to follow up appts at Kennedy Krieger w/ possible overnight stay. As well as some alterations around the home to make her more comfortable & protected.  We ask that you find it in your heart to help us help Sydnee stay on track and continue to receive the best care possible.  Any excess in these medical donations will be donated on Sydnee's behalf to the Kennedy Krieger Institute to assist them in helping others in need dealing with various brain injuries and diseases.  They truly save & change lives.

Thank you from Sydnee & the entire Myers Family.
