Suzy's Dental Fund

Hi, my name is Suzy, I'm 20 years old and live in Victoria BC. I work part-time, am in university and volunteer at the SPCA.

I need extensive dental work done, including multiple extractions, multiple fillings, a root canal, 2 bridges and 4 crowns. The root canal costs $1000, the bridges cost over $3000 each, the crowns cost over $1000 each, plus all other costs that come with dental work. To get this work done, I'm going to the dentist every week for the next 12 weeks.

The reason I need so much dental work is a long, and sad, story. When I was 2, I was diagnosed with cancer - acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L.) to be exact. I went into remission when I was 4, but the treatment that I needed is what has destroyed my teeth. Because leukemia is a cancer that's in the blood, it means that the chemotherapy I recieved was full body. Chemo is really bad for teeth, and because people are born with their adult teeth already in their mouth, my adult teeth were severely affected by the chemo. The chemo stopped the enamel from deveolping properly, affected root development, and created a lot of gum problems.  I had dental surgeries at a very young age (3 years old and 7 years old) to remove damaged adult teeth that were still in my gums and hadn't come through yet.

Because my teeth are so weak, when I was 12 years old, I smashed my 2 front teeth out in an accident. I went to a dentist (not the one I go to now) to get them fixed. He didn't do the fix properly, so now I have to get them re-done, which I only recently found out from this new dentist when I got my intake exam and x-rays done.

I need the dental work not because I neglected my oral health, but because of things out of my control - my medical and dental history. All of the dental work is necessary - not comsmetic - and neither me nor my mom have dental insurance, so the total cost of $16,000 is all out of pocket, and it's money we don't have.

I'm a special case though - I have severe dental anxiety that stems from really bad dental experiences as a young child - the dentist I went to was a fresh-out-of-dentistry school dentist who put in fillings without properly freezing me so I felt everything and he didn't believe that I could so he didn't do any extra freezing, and he pulled out a tooth without telling me, or my mom and didn't do any freezing. Because of this, I now go to a dentist that specializes in people with dental anxiety. This means that I have extra costs associated with my dental work, like counselling and anxiety reducing treatments, and these cost a lot. However, they are necessary to me and being able to get my dental work done. I only recently started going to this office, and before that, the last time I saw a dentist was 8 years ago. Calling the dentists office and making my first appointment was a huge step for me.

If you are able to contribute to my dental fund, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
