Suzanne Wray's Recovery Fund

Suzanne endured increasing back pain for a prolonged period of time, yet had continued to work in nursing while providing financial and emotional support to an extended family struggling with many complex issues. Her husband Paul worked tirelessly to maintain a balance in shoring these efforts. After much discussion and debate, it was determined having surgery for spinal fusion would be the best choice for mitigating her pain and improving Suzanne’s quality of life.

Suzanne had surgery on November 17th. Initially it appeared the surgery was a success and Suzanne was discharged home to continue recovery.

Three weeks following the procedure, Suzanne began to experience excruciating pain and was unable to move her legs. In her usual stoic effort, she asked Paul to take her to the emergency room by car (she did not want to arrive in an ambulance). Paul insisted on the ambulance, which was fortunate because it was soon determined that an abscess had developed at the surgical site and was pressing against her spine. Suzanne began showing signs of sepsis (a massive and often fatal infection). She was sent back to surgery to evacuate the abscess and relieve the pressure on her spine. Subsequently Suzanne was transferred to ICU in critical condition. After several rocky days and many, many prayers, Suzanne was transferred to a step down unit and the long road to recovery began.

Suzanne was discharged home on December 14th. She has continued to experience uncontrollable and debilitating pain despite IV pain medication. They came to the realization if Suzanne is going to regain her health and physical abilities, she will need to go to a facility for rehabilitation.

There are many unanswered questions that remain today. Will she be able to walk? Will she regain full neurologic function? One thing is certain; Suzanne will need many weeks of expensive IV antibiotics and extensive rehabilitative therapies. Despite solid insurance coverage, rehabilitation facility expenses will be largely excluded, so the costs for Paul & Suzanne will be stratospheric well beyond their means. It is ironic considering both of them dedicated their careers to helping others in the health care arena.

Many individuals have reached out asking how to help. This Go Fund Me drive offers an avenue to do so. The out of pocket expenses will likely reach tens of thousands of dollars. Contributions will help to defray these costs and allow Suzanne and Paul to focus energy on her rehabilitation.
