FLORISTRY BACK TO NATURE - Sustainable Floristry Network
For an industry that celebrates beauty and nature, the floral design industry doesn’t have the greenest credentials.
From the excessive use of floral foam (a non-biodegradable, non-recyclable plastic that enters the environment as a microplastic), to the large amount of single-use plastics in packaging, and a high chemical and carbon footprint associated with transporting these perishables all over the world, there are multiple issues leading to an unsustainable industry.
The Sustainable Floristry Network is a new global industry initiative endorsed by a collective of experienced florists with a passion to see change in the global industry.
Our goal is to see the floral design industry change direction and celebrate flowers and floral design with the smallest environmental footprint possible. The movement has already begun by way of a popular hashtags #nofloralfoam , #seasonalfloweralliance and #sustainablefloristry and we are now looking to progress this further.
We hope to achieve this through:
· The creation of an educational website that will act as the global industry’s go-to for information on sustainability and cut flowers/floral design.
· A recognition program for florists who demonstrate a commitment to sustainable business practices
· A behaviour change and advertising campaign for both florists and consumers, to direct the industry in a more sustainable direction
It is our hope to see significant change take place in the teaching institutions, where floral foam and the use of large amounts of single use plastics are still considered to be an essential components of floral design.
We need help to kickstart this initiative and develop the campaign, especially the website design and content, in consultation with suitable experts including:
Design and build
Video production
Content research and writing
Advertising campaign
The development of support materials for Sustainable Floristry Network Members
We would be so grateful for help to get this started.
The Sustainable Floristry Network is an Australian-based social enterprise and a registered Australian Company.
