Grannie puzzles for Madagascar

On behalf of my, wonderfully kind, amazing, wacky  (but not so tech savvy) Grannie – I’m using social media in the hopes of helping her fundraise £3,300 for children in Madagascar through SOS Villages. She will be undertaking a 13,200-piece puzzle. To illustrate this challenge, if you put all the puzzle pieces end to end they would span almost 400 metres (equivalent to the length of 4 football pitches) and stand 19 metres high when stacked. 

Madagascar is an utterly beautiful country; it is also one of the poorest in the world. Thousands of families face food shortages and cannot afford basic necessities. Madagascan children represent the most vulnerable segment of the population. Around 8.8 million children live in poverty  – they are in urgent need of support and protection.  Madagascar continues to battle the ongoing health crisis it faces due to Malaria and the plague with the addition of Coronavirus making this reality ever harder. Upon learning about the severe poverty that exists in Madagascar my Grannie (Carole) has been motivated to help and so has dedicated her time to raising money for charity while staying safe in isolation. She has chosen to sponsor SOS Villages because of the amazing work they do providing loving homes for children who have been abandoned and orphaned. They provide them with food, shelter, medical care, and an education. Their vision is for 'every child to belong to a family, and grow up with love, respect and security.' 

Carol has begun and has completed the first of six sections during and since the first lockdown (pictured puzzling above) and just begun the second. (Compromised eyesight means puzzle can only be tackled in daylight). The goal my Grannie has set of £3,300 amounts to 25p per puzzle piece. This amount would fund 3 Madagascan Villages for 4 years which would be amazing! We would love it if you were able to sponsor even a small amount – every penny makes a difference, so please consider if you could sponsor a few pieces of the puzzle today to better the lives of children in Madagascar. SOS Children’s Villages started working in Madagascar in 1986.

SOS medical centres work to prevent and treat diseases. They provide medical-check-ups and vaccinations and also assist pregnant women and young babies

SOS provide a new home in SOS families for children who have lost, or cannot live with their own families.  Wherever possible however, they continue to work closely with the children’s family of origin, so that they can stay in touch. In some cases, the children can return to live with their families. 

SOS Family Strengthening Programmes to try to make sure children who are at risk of losing the care and protection of their family grow up in a caring family environment. 

Nearly 2000 children across the country attend kindergartens and schools run by SOS Children’s Villages and they continue to support young people until they are able to live independently.
