Surgery Fundraiser—Mia Michalik

In 2014 Mia fell while at a party. She was seen at the ER and there she was diagnosed with scoliosis.  Mia then had an appointment at Geisinger Woodbine Clinic and the diagnosis was confirmed.  She was then referred to a pediatric spine specialist who ordered further tests.  An MRI revealed that Mia also had a tethered spinal cord. She was then referred to a pediatric neurosurgeon who decided to just monitor the tethered cord.  Mia’s degree of curvature continued to progress and she was fitted for a brace.  
Over the course of the next 3 years, Mia’s curve continued to grow, and it became very noticeable.  At which time her parents decided a second opinion was needed. On July 16, 2018, Mia had an appointment at Shriners Children’s Hospital Spine Center in Philadelphia.  Upon further testing, much to her and her parents surprise the film revealed that her curve was now 78 degrees and she would need surgery to correct it.  With a thoracic curve, there is a chance of the lungs and heart being compressed.  This was beginning to happen with Mia’s left lung. 
Mia will be undergoing a 6-hour surgery on October 25, to correct the spinal deformity, as well as to release her spinal cord.  She will spend one week in the hospital and will be off school until December 10.  She will have physical therapy during her recovery as well as two follow up appointments at Shriners before being cleared to return to school. 
Although Mia has insurance, there are deductibles, co-pays, pharmaceutical needs, and medications that would not be fully covered; as well as travel expenses.
