Scoliosis: an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine.
Spinal Fusion Surgery: In spinal fusion for scoliosis, rods, hooks, wires, or screws are attached to the curved part of the backbone and the spine is straightened. Small pieces of bone are then put over the spine. The bone pieces will grow together with the spinal bone, fusing it into the proper position.
When I was eight I was diagnosed with severe scoliosis. As I grew, my scoliosis also grew with me and worsened. I am now seventeen. The curvature of my spine now affects major organs such as my lungs and digestive system. We were told by a doctor a year ago than I need to have surgery. We went to get other opinions and they all had the same outcome; spinal fusion. I was told I would have to have the surgery with in the next two years (2018-2019) but the sooner, the better the outcome. Even though I have stopped going, my curves will continue to add one degree to the bends each year, unless the surgery takes place.
I will be having the surgery on July 9th, in Barcelona. After going through the public health care system and talking with the surgeon, we found we had doubts, and I worried about the quality. We then decided to go private. Since this surgery will include tampering with my spinal cord, we wanted some one with experience. Yet this is an extremely costly process costing around 50,000 Euros (80,000) dollars, but for us, it is not an option.
The surgery is not an option, I do have to have the surgery within the next two year, but is it our choice to go through the private system.
Taking all of this into consideration, I would like to ask for your support for our family as we begin this journey.
