Surgery for nicko

A few weeks ago we found out that Nicko needed some serious dental work.
We took him to the vet for weight loss assuming he was just getting old (he is 12) and was having trouble getting up to eat. Vet ended up telling us he had a chipped tooth and a completely broken molar. They referred us to a specialist and we scheduled to take him in after we got back in town!
Good news, right?! He isn't eating because his teeth hurt! Easy fix!!
$600 for dental surgery...(Banfield was not equipped for the surgery which meant we had to pay for anesthesia and procedure out of pocket with the referred specialist)
Today was his appointment, and the vet calls me to let me know the surgery went well but while lifting him off the table they felt a lump in his stomach and needed the okay to do x-rays.
...that was another $105...
Vet calls back and explains to me there is a mass and they cannot tell if its located on the spleen side or liver or if it can be removed at all.
..great! $105 extra to tell me they are unsure where it is or if anything can be done.
She does tell me I can be referred to ANOTHER vet for exploratory surgery to find out if its removable and "possibly" be removed at that same time, but it would cost somewhere between $900 and $1100 with anesthesia.
Face palm...
I'm asking friends and family for help! I love Nicko and those of you who know the old man know he's a gentle giant! We are looking at 2-3 more vet visits. First would be exploratory and hopefully removal. Second would be removal if the first time around they couldn't remove it and we needed to be referred to a different specialist. Third will be the check up that should be covered by Banfield.
