Hi, my name is Mike Morales. I was blessed to have 7 brothers and sisters. I was also blessed to have a younger sister “Mercedes” who currently lives in Pico Rivera, California, and has a lifetime medical condition called dwarfism. Dwarfism is a genetic condition of short stature, typically resulting in an adult’s maximum height being 4 feet 10 inches, or under. Some people with dwarfism age with no nerve or bone structural issues. Many, like Mercedes, run into medical issues as they age.
Growing up, I’ve seen Mercedes endure bullying, shaming, taunting, and harassment, to say the least. I’ve even had to defend Mercedes in public places many times, because people can be cruel, or uneducated about what dwarfism is all about.
Mercedes has recently developed issues with her spine, pinched nerves, and sciatica. The levels of pain are unbelievable. Medications and shots do work, but not all of the time.
In the workplace, Mercedes’ medical condition placed her into a protected class. However, a request to receive state disability insurance benefits has been recently denied. This was a huge financial blow that Mercedes was not expecting. State disability insurance benefits were Mercedes’ last life line.
Mercedes is a shining star. Her faith in God, and in friends and family, has gotten her this far in life. Even in her levels of pain today, Mercedes somehow finds a way to attend church every Sunday at St. Marianne’s Catholic Church in Pico Rivera.
Mercedes is an extreme “coupon-er” and is always finding ways to use her coupons to purchase products to give back to the poor and needy. Mercedes always places the needs of others in front of her own. Mercedes doesn’t drive. This means that Mom and I work together to drive Mercedes to medical appointments, prescription pick-up’s, or drive any other place she needs to go.
Now, physicians want Mercedes to undergo an operation on September 14, 2017 to help correct two spine issues in an effort to relieve or manage the excruciating pain. Operations are common in dwarfism cases. With this operation, Mercedes will be facing a 4-month recovery process, and will be bed-ridden most of the time. With no source of income, and inability to work, she will be unable to pay for rent, pay for food, pay her utility bills, pay her cell phone bills, pay for prescription medications, or even pay for the uncovered costs that Medi-Cal will not pay for as a result of the coming operation. All funds raised will go toward the costs of surgery expenses, prescription medication expenses, housing expenses, and transportation expenses. And, if there’s enough, a 2-liter bottle of Coke now and then.
It’s now time to recognize Mercedes’ needs.
Mercedes and I need your financial support to get through this burden, and keep a roof over her head. I have set a $2,000 fundraising goal. But, the sky is the limit.
Mercedes doesn’t know that I’ve shared this with world. Mercedes has always been a private person, and doesn’t like asking anyone for help. But I’m here to change that. I know the tears of joy will be priceless when Mercedes sees all the love and support the world has returned to her!
