Supporting Rob & Melissa Stevens

In 2009, at the age of 34, our friend Melissa Stevens received the test results that confirmed all our worst fears. She had been diagnosed with Huntington's Disease (HD), a cruel neurodegenerative genetic disorder.

Being diagnosed with a terminal illness can be debilitating, persistently depressing and cause extreme anxiety, but with the love and support of her husband Rob, her family, and friends, she continues to battle this horrendous disease with a grace and determination.

Melissa’s condition has deteriorated more rapidly over the last two years where she can no longer stand up by herself, has lost her ability to speak clearly, attend the restroom or eat without assistance, or even so simply change the TV channel. 

While her physical capabilities have declined, she has been strong and resilient in her fight to live her life as normally as possible doing so with her beautiful smile. In fact, I can’t remember I time that I’ve encountered Melissa when she wasn’t smiling. Given how devastating her daily routine could be, her smile continues to encourage her care givers, friends and family.  

Rob and her family truly want to have her comfortable residing in her home as long as possible. At home, Melissa feels safe, secure, and well taken care of thru home care services while Rob is at work. Additionally, she finds comfort from their two English Bull Dogs, Norm and Bella. 

It is my goal today not only to advance awareness about the devastating effects of this horrible disease, but also to raise monetary support for the Stevens family. Melissa is still our Melissa! She is still of sound mind, loves to laugh and continues to brighten the room with her smile. Your donation will support Melissa, specifically in the following ways:

** Continued payment for ongoing Medical bills

** The purchase of a transit van for easier transportation in her wheelchair

** Upgrades to the home for wheelchair accessibility
