HOW - Heroes on the Water

Donation protected

The need...
HOW needs a new trailer to cart kayaks to and from the lakes for their events. Last year they had items stolen, and they've struggled to replace them on the bare minimum of donations. I've been helping with this program for two years now, and I've seen it help so many, that I want to help them get there.

Who am I?
I'm a person who appreciates the sacrifice these people made.
I'm a person who believes giving back is the best way to live.
I'm a mother of three sons, and I have multiple family members who've served.
I'm an author, with an amazing group of fans who love to give back too.  www.lorikingbooks.com

The basics....
Heroes on the Water, (HOW) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, the national headquarters is based in Allen, Texas. HOW is a program designed to help our Nation’s warriors and veterans from all branches of the United States military unwind using the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayak’s. What looks like a day trip of paddling and fishing is in fact something much deeper and long-lasting.

The Kansas Chapter was established in May 2014. With a small group of volunteers and a handful of kayaks our first event was held on June 7, 2014. The Chapter hosts weekly outings on Wednesday nights at Lake Shawnee, Topeka, Kansas for inpatients of the Topeka VA. We typically have between 12 and 15 Veterans attend. At these outings our goal is consistency. The Veterans arrive, we feed them, and then they are given an opportunity to either fish or kayak or both.

We also host monthly outings throughout Kansas, these outing are open to any Veteran and their families. At these outing our goal is to provide an opportunity for the family to re-engage in an outdoor activity that they all can come to love and enjoy.

Our chapter survives completely on donations, we are supported by tax deductible donations of funds, gear, kayaks, food, and other necessities by generous individuals and corporations. 100% of the donations raised by the Kansas Chapter stays in the Kansas Chapter and are utilized by the veterans and their family members. We strive to keep the cost per veteran as low as possible to maximize our donations. The Kansas Chapter is run by unpaid volunteers who donate their time and skills to help us make each outing a success.
