Supporting Miss Donna

Donation protected
Dear family and friends of Bright Beginnings,

It is with a heavy heart, but so much hope, that I tell you our beloved Miss Donna was given the news recently she has cancer.  Just over a year ago, Donna lost her husband of 40 years to the same type of cancer – esophageal.  On Tuesday, December 19th, Donna will begin an aggressive treatment of chemo and radiation.  During her treatment, Donna and her team of doctors decided she should continue to work as she is able.  Donna absolutely loves the children, and this will act as therapy for her.  She may need to wear a mask as acute colds and illness travel through our classrooms.  We will talk with the children about germs and why Donna is wearing a mask, though, so it is not a shock.  We are always vigilant about our health policy and will continue to be.

Donna is a big part of our Bright Beginnings family, also a part of my own.  Having been a teacher here for almost 20 years, Donna has been a loving caregiver to hundreds of children.  Her attitude is amazing and our staff has rallied around her, in typical BB fashion.  She refuses to let this beat her.  The teachers and staff at Bright Beginnings are some pretty cool people, but we know the families are also top notch!

That is one of the reasons I write to you today.  We will continue to support Donna the best way we know how.  I will be starting a Gofundme campaign on Bright Beginnings Facebook page this weekend.  I was also hoping to start a gift card drive.  Donna frequents the Weis grocery store, Walmart, Sheetz and local restaurants as a treat.  Donna lives in Hummelstown, and has a daughter and a grown grandson, who live not too far from her.

Sadly, the insurance plan Donna has will not cover anything but two regular PCP visits per year.  As appalling as this is, Donna had nowhere else to go but the marketplace when her husband passed.  The plan she chose was appealing only due to price.  We are working with our insurance broker and will advocate on behalf of Donna.  We promise to work vigorously to get her the right insurance for her needs.  This is just one more reason we are requesting your support.  The financial burden this will place on Donna, while she should be focusing on getting well, must be overwhelming.

In the meantime, well wishes, thoughts, prayers, gift cards, contributions will be very much appreciated.  There is no one like Donna Eversmeyer!  Families who have been part of Bright Beginnings 10-15 years ago still ask about her when I see them out.  She is truly an angel among us.  Thank you for your time and may you all be happy and healthy this holiday season!

Sincerely,

Amy Bennett
