Support East Greenwich Teachers

Donation protected
Teachers impact the growth and development of every student. They devote endless amounts of time to providing students with the highest level of education they can achieve. Our teachers are helpful to all of their students, spending dozens of unpaid hours to do their job, and unlike many other professions, teachers passionately carry out their job because they love doing so. It is now time for the students and community to give back when the teachers need help. In the East Greenwich School District, the current contract offer from the school committee to the teachers does not treat teachers fairly.

East Greenwich is a high-performing district, but teachers do not feel as if the current contract offer would compensate for the endless hours of work they do for their students. Every single teacher deserves to be given a proper salary, good healthcare, and reasonable contract terms - the current contract offer does not seem to give this to all teachers. Town officials must recognize that in order to uphold a great education system, teachers' greatness must be upheld as well.

As a form of protest, teachers are working-to-rule - strictly following the current contract. Clubs are being shut down indefinitely as teachers are not mandated to host clubs, teachers are rarely after school or in early for extra help, and budgets are put on hold. With no blame to the teachers at all, the current unacceptable contract offer is directly affecting students and the greatness of the East Greenwich School District.

As students and community members we must show support and raise awareness for our teachers. In the Civic Action club, an independent group of eleven East Greenwich High School students, we work our hardest to get students in the district, especially at the high school, involved in local, state, and national politics. We inspire and encourage civic action, create a community of students to assist each other with their political goals, and make political change by letting the world hear the voices of high school students. Now, we are taking a stand for the people who shaped and raised us - our teachers.

On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, EGHS students will be hosting our own EGHS Teacher Appreciation Day. This will include a walk-in with EGHS teachers to signify our solidarity and “working-to-rule” by not entering the building any earlier than specified in the contract,  followed by a breakfast from the students to the teachers. Later on, at the 7:00pm School Committee meeting at Cole Middle School we will host a student sit-in and public comment session, with all due respect to the school committee.

Teachers inspire their students and change their lives. If you want this to continue for the current and future students and uphold the sanctity of East Greenwich education, your donations will directly support our teachers and give them a big “Thank you.” We must show them that their hard work will never go unnoticed.

1) If we raise $200, this will fund a breakfast for all teachers on EGHS Teacher Appreciation Day

2) $250 will fund #1, and supplies for our actions

3) $500 will fund #1, #2, and tissue boxes, dry erase markers, and small gifts for teachers

4) $1,500 will fund #1, #2, #3, and small gifts and supplies for other schools in the district as well

5) All extra funds will be used in other ways to thank and support EG teachers, as we do not know how long the fight for a reasonable contract will last

All steps listed above are approximate and are subject to shift.

As students we cannot thank you enough for any sort of donation. While we appreciate you supporting our teachers, nobody will be more thankful than the teachers themselves, especially in a time when teachers do not feel appreciated by their own town and school committee.

To end in simple words, "A teacher is like a candle — it consumes itself to light the way for others."
