My name is Yadira Hernandez Perez. I am a first-year law student at CUNY School of Law. I am the first in my family to pursue a legal education, but I am here to ensure there are many more of us.

 

WHY LAW SCHOOL?

As an Indigenous Undocumented woman living in poverty throughout my life, I have and continue to experience systemic racism in ways that have dramatically shaped how I approach social justice; AND, working on the ground alongside my community inspired me to become a social justice lawyer to continue advocating for relief from deportation and incarceration, to change the discourse for the communities who have been excluded to lead, mobilize, and catalyze social movements, and create tools for our collective liberation and healing. 

 

 

WHY CROWDFUNDING?

I’d lived in California for the past 14 years and moving to New York has let me ineligible from qualifying from in-state resident tuition. Being undocumented also limits the financial aid opportunities available. I have also applied to several scholarships, but I have not received any scholarships, and I am struggling financially. Therefore, any and each support I received from you will relieve some of the financial burdens that I have been weighing on me these last few weeks.

 

My goal is to raise $18,000. I will use the funds raised to mainly cover my tuition of my first year of law school. I’m enrolled in my school's payment plan, and I’m reducing other costs as much as I can to mitigate the financial burden.

                     Housing $13,536.00

                     Books $1,364.00

                     Medical, transportation, food, personal expenses $9,815

                     TOTAL: $50,918 per year

Mi nombre es Yadira Hernandez Perez. Soy un estudiante de primer año en la Facultad de Derecho de CUNY. Soy la primera en mi familia en poder tener una educación legal, pero estoy aquí para asegurarme de que no voy a ser la última.

¿POR QUÉ LA ESCUELA DE DERECHO?
Como mujer indígena indocumentada en los Estados Unidos que ha vivido en la pobreza a lo largo de mi vida, he experimentado y sigo experimentando el racismo sistémico de formas que han moldeado drásticamente la forma en que abordo la justicia social; Y, trabajar en el terreno junto con mi comunidad me ha inspirado a convertirme en una abogada de justicia social para continuar abogando por el alivio de las deportaciones y el encarcelamiento, cambiar el discurso sobre las comunidades que han sido excluidas para liderar, movilizar y catalizar movimientos sociales, y crear herramientas para nuestra liberación y sanación colectiva.

¿POR QUÉ ESTA RECAUDACION DE FONDOS?
He vivido en California durante los últimos 14 años y mudarme a Nueva York no me permitió calificar para la matrícula de residente del estado. Ser indocumentada también limita las oportunidades de ayuda financiera disponibles. También he postulado a varias becas, pero no he recibido ninguna beca. Por lo tanto, todos y cada uno de los apoyos que recibí de ustedes aliviarán algunas de las cargas financieras que he estado pesando sobre mí estas últimas semanas.

Mi objetivo es recaudar $ 18,000. Usaré los fondos recaudados para cubrir la matrícula de mi primer año de la facultad de derecho. Estoy inscrita en el plan de pago de mi escuela y estoy reduciendo otros costos tanto como pueda para mitigar la carga financiera.
