Support the loss of Xander

I am Xander Haben’s sister in law...This tragic situation started with a headache and a small fever last Wednesday(3/17/2021) where Xander and siblings were sent home from school. Xander stayed in his room over a couple days and got lots of rest, fluids and over the counter cold/flu medication. He started feeling better on Sunday however Xander  was still complaining of a headache, which is an usual occurrence, and stated he was having neck pain as well. On Monday(3/22/2021) they noticed that Xander was somewhat delirious, not really making sense, not really moving. So mama bear got him
in the car and brought him to the ER. They did neurological testing, blood work and a COVID test. Everything came back “normal” and he was sent home. Unfortunately come Tuesday(3/23/2021) while mama bear was with a sibling of Xander’s at the doctor while his twin Rachael was at home keeping an eye on him. Rachael became nervous and contacted Tianna(mama bear) stating Xander needed help; he was not speaking correctly, couldn’t walk without assistance and wasn’t making sense. Micah(papa bear) came home from work to bring Xander to the ER to find out what was wrong. They did a lot of tests and came across that Xander’s brain and spinal cord were swelling and they needed to act fast so they transferred Xander to Mercy where we anxiously awaited for him to exit surgery. At 11:48pm on Tuesday night he came out of surgery and did very well. Mercy planned to have him intubated and kept under for at least a few days. And likely 2 weeks or more in the ICU. Of course mama bears claws came out and she fought HARD to get Mayo to take on his case AND THEY DID!! He is being transferred today(3/24/2021) where they will run more tests and have more answers than Mercy. So far an infectious disease doctor from Mercy has stated that it is a trifecta...the diagnosis of ventricitis, meningitis and the abscesses in the ventricles of his brain; which is where this rarity comes in, Xander is 18 for starters, he’s allergic to the meningitis vaccine and when they find abscesses like these they find about 5 which can be surgically removed however Xander has hundreds, yes hundreds. Xander is in a medically induced coma until further notice. But this is a long road ahead of this extremely strong family. Expenses will go towards Xander’s medical bills, stays at nearby hotels to the Mayo, travel and more. So please do what you can to support Xander in the fight of his life. I will continue to keep this page as updated as the family is. We love you Xander!!
