Support the Ugandan rhino rangers

Donation protected

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a conservation success story! Their 22 Southern White Rhinos are slowly increasing in numbers, with the 24 hour protection of armed, highly trained rangers. The sanctuary is also protecting a diverse ecosystem including more than 300 bird species.

Unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on their fundraising and stopped all tourist visits. As a result, half the rangers have had to be sent home without pay and rangers currently still working at the sanctuary are on half pay. The lead ranger Moses Okello reached out to his international ranger colleagues for help buying staple foods (maize and beans) to keep these rangers and their families from going hungry.

We will send them the money directly, via Western Union (this is the best way to reach rural Uganda), and we have successfully done this with our own money before. It is a direct cash injection into the local community, who need help right now.

We visited the Ziwa sanctuary in 2018 and were guided by one of the rangers, who are experts in rhino behaviour and habits, so tourists can safely marvel at them. We got so close to a mother and baby rhino, and it was one of the truly memorable experiences of my life. The rangers who protect these charismatic mammals at great risk to their own lives need some food to tide them over until tourists can start visiting again.

Many thanks!
